What it was
SaaSCity is a gamified directory and launch platform for SaaS products, startups and AI tools. Every listing gets a permanent page and its own building on an isometric city map, plus a DR 66 dofollow backlink. New launches go out every Monday with community voting and weekly rankings. 1,700+ products listed, 2,300+ users.
Free listings grew steadily and founders loved the city-map gimmick, but almost nobody upgraded to paid. We kept shipping features instead of fixing distribution, and the Monday launch cadence alone wasn't enough to keep visitors coming back. Biggest mistake: Building more city-map features instead of doubling down on SEO, the one channel that was already bringing founders. Retention / experiments: Founders listed for the backlink but rarely returned to vote. We tried Monday launch emails and weekly rankings — opens were fine, repeat visits weren't.
Charge earlier and pick one acquisition channel before adding features. A directory is only as valuable as the audience it sends — build the traffic first, the map second.
